Apply to serve on the GaCDHH

O.C.G.A. § 30-1-5 expands and further defines the roles of the GaCDHH. Georgia residents may apply for Commission appointments through the Department of Human Services at dhs.georgia.gov/gacdhh. The Commission is comprised of 12 members who serve for 3-year terms with a maximum of two consecutive terms:

  • 10 Commissioners are appointed by the Governor
    • Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) member whose primary language is American Sign Language (ASL)
    • DHH member whose primary languages are ASL and Spoken English
    • DHH member whose primary language is Spoken English
    • Deaf-Blind member
    • Latened deafened member (i.e., became deaf after the age of 18 years)
    • Parent of a DHH child who uses ASL
    • Parent of a DHH child who uses Spoken English exclusively
    • Otolaryngologist or audiologist who serves DHH constituents
    • Private Service Provider for DHH constituents
    • Program Service Providers for DHH constituents
  • 1 Commissioner is appointed by the Senate Committee on Assignments
    • At-large position
  • 1 Commissioner is appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives
    • At-large position

Apply to serve on the Stakeholder Advisory Committee 

(Early intervention and elementary education focus)

Georgia residents may apply for the Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) through the Department of Human Services at dhs.georgia.gov/gacdhh. The SAC supports the DHH Language and Literacy State Taskforce including members from the Department of Public Health (DPH), Department of Early care and Learning (DECAL), and the Department of Education (GaDOE). The SAC is comprised of 13 members who serve for 3-year terms with a maximum of two consecutive terms:

  • Parent of a child aged 0-9 years who is DHH and uses ASL
  • Parent of a child aged 0-9 years who is DHH and use Spoken English exclusively
  • Parent of a child aged 0-9 years who is DHH and for whom English is a second language (e.g., the family uses Spanish)
  • DHH adult (18+ years) whose primary language is ASL
  • DHH adult (18+ years) whose uses Spoken English exclusively
  • Certified early intervention specialist serving DHH children 0-3 years who use ASL
  • Certified early intervention specialist serving DHH children 0-3 years who use Spoken English exclusively
  • Certified early intervention specialist serving DHH children 0-3 years in non-Metro Atlanta areas
  • Certified teacher serving DHH students Pre-Kindergarten to 3rd grade who use Spoken English exclusively and who are enrolled in non-Metro Atlanta school systems
  • Certified teacher serving DHH students Pre-Kindergarten to 3rd grade who use Spoken English exclusively and who are enrolled in Metro Atlanta school systems
  • Certified teacher serving DHH students Pre-Kindergarten to 3rd grade who use ASL and Spoken English
  • Certified teacher serving DHH students Pre-Kindergarten to 3rd grade who use ASL and are enrolled in a state school for the deaf (i.e., Atlanta Area School for the Deaf or Georgia School for the Deaf)
  • Pediatric audiologist with knowledge of language development who provides audiological assessment and management for hearing aids, cochlear implants, and bone-conduction aids for children who are DHH
